Asheville Festivals
The Asheville area hosts several festivals throughout the year. Perhaps there could be no better way to experience the culture and traditions of Southern Appalachia than when enjoying a festival here, surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Downtown After Five provides free live music entertainment in downtown Asheville every third Friday, May through September, with the goal of encouraging locals and visitors to enjoy downtown Asheville and support local businesses and entertainers. With a musical lineup that covers all genres, there is something for everyone to enjoy.
Shindig on the Green, is a free mountain bluegrass music and dance festival that takes place on the Roger McGuire Green at Pack Square Park. Musicians and dancers from across Western North Carolina gather to share the region's Southern Appalachian mountain culture and traditions. An added bonus to this event is that you may find groups of musicians gathering for informal jam sessions around the Park.
The Mountain Dance and Folk Festival entertains with authentic bluegrass music. Since 1928, traditional mountain musicians and dancers have come to entertain and educate, and the festival has served an important role in raising awareness and understanding of the Southern Appalachian culture found throughout this region. The songs and dances shared at this event reflect centuries of Scottish, English, Irish, Cherokee and African heritage found throughout the Great Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Asheville's Annual Bluegrass First Class is a 3-day event which provides a weekend of exciting acoustic music performances featuring many of the area’s finest local and regional bluegrass musicians.
The Bele Chere (meaning “beautiful living”) Festival is an annual 3-day festival on the streets of Downtown Asheville featuring live, original music all day and night. This is one of the Southeast's largest free outdoor street festivals offering the sights, sounds, and tastes of some of the region’s finest art, music, and cuisine - with four music stages featuring local, regional and national performers and hundreds of artists who showcase their crafts in metalwork, woodwork, pottery, jewelry, photography and much more. The Taste of Asheville is also a part of the festival. Hosted by Asheville Independent Restaurants this event gives people the opportunity to experience the quality and diversity of the food from the area's most talented chefs and food professionals.
