The four season climate offers various temperatures and landscapes which allow for many different lifestyles. The mountains offer a myriad of trails for hikers and bikers, including more than 800 miles of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whitewater rafting has become another one of the State’s drawing cards, including training grounds for Olympic prospects. In addition, canoeing and fly fishing opportunities abound in many of the mountain streams across the region.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, which stretches for over 400 miles beginning in The Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ending in The Great Smoky National Park, attracts thousands of visitors annually making it the most visited part of the America Park System. Its highest point, just south of Waynesville is over 6,000 feet.
